How to Care for Your Race Suit: Cleaning & Maintenance Guide

A quality race suit is an investment — and like any investment, it rewards proper care. Whether you're wearing your Dash Racegear suit on the karting track or displaying it as a collector's piece, following the right care routine will keep it looking and performing its best for years to come.

1. Read the Care Label First

Always start with the care label inside your suit. Different materials have different requirements, and ignoring the label is the fastest way to damage your gear. Most race suits made from Nomex or Nomex-blend fabrics have specific washing instructions that must be followed.

2. Washing Your Race Suit

For most karting and replica suits, follow these guidelines:

  • Machine wash on a gentle/delicate cycle at 30°C (86°F) or lower.
  • Use a mild, non-biological detergent. Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, and harsh chemicals — these can degrade the fabric and affect any fire-resistant properties.
  • Turn the suit inside out before washing to protect the outer livery and embroidery.
  • Wash separately or with similar colors to avoid color transfer.

3. Drying

  • Never tumble dry a race suit. High heat can shrink the fabric and damage the construction.
  • Hang the suit on a wide hanger and allow it to air dry naturally, away from direct sunlight. UV exposure can fade colors over time.
  • Do not wring or twist the suit to remove water.

4. Ironing & Storage

  • Most race suits should not be ironed directly. If creases are a concern, use a steamer on a low setting.
  • Store your suit on a padded hanger in a cool, dry place. Avoid folding for long periods as this can cause permanent creases.
  • Keep away from sharp objects that could snag the fabric.

5. Inspecting for Wear

Regularly inspect your suit for signs of wear, especially at stress points like the knees, elbows, and seat. If you notice fraying, thinning fabric, or damaged seams, it may be time to replace the suit — especially if it's used for actual racing.

Keep It Race-Ready

A well-maintained race suit not only looks better — it lasts longer and performs better. Take care of your Dash Racegear suit and it'll take care of you on and off the track.
